Following recent discussions, ESN UK is strongly in favour of the implementation of a UK - EU Youth Mobility scheme. Post-withdrawal from the Erasmus+ programme, study and work opportunities for young Brits have been significantly reduced. This new youth mobility scheme would represent a critical step towards removing barriers and offering young people in both the EU and the UK new opportunities and a sense of optimism for their studies and careers. Whilst enabling mobility to the UK and introducing new opportunities for British students in the EU, it must be noted that the Youth Mobility scheme does not act as a replacement for Erasmus+. The continued absence of reciprocal mobility will still remain an issue for students in the UK and those around Europe that want to study at our institutions.

We call on policymakers in the UK and the EU to work together to adopt a framework which allows young people to once again participate in cross border mobility opportunities. The restoration of pathways to international experiences will serve to enhance the employability, skills development and tolerance of young people across Europe.

ESN UK believes that a sustainable UK - EU Youth mobility programme should prioritise accessibility and inclusivity. It should ensure that all young people, regardless of background, can access the programme. As such, in pursuit of an equitable scheme, we call upon the UK Government to reconsider the proposed financial access barriers including the fees and health surcharges.
